Doing Aerobics Safely

Working out too hard can lead to aches and pain and long term damage!
Aerobics are great exercises to increase your overall fitness level. However, if you don’t follow the right advice you run a risk of injuring yourself. Below are some simple tips you can follow in order to help stay safe…
What to wear
First and foremost, when you are doing aerobics consider your dress. Wearing good shoes is important. Aerobics require lots of movement, make sure your laces are tied so they won’t come undone, and that the shoes have some grip and are not worn. You should also consider the other articles of clothing you’re wearing. If they are too constricting or too heavy, you may become more easily overheated. Your clothing should breathe well and not be too tight.
Where you Exercise
Also consider your workout area, especially if you are working out at home. When you’re at home, you’ll need to make sure that you area is large enough for you to move and not knock into anything. It is also crucial that you service your workout equipment to make sure that it is in the best shape possible and will not cause injury – even if you have basic equipment like a stepping board or elastic resistance bands, take a look at them before you exercise to make sure there are no cracks or frays. Your workout area at home should also be clean.
Workload
Another tip to staying safe is to not push yourself beyond your limit. If you push yourself too hard, you may find yourself pulling muscles, experiencing cramps and not feeling well after the workout. You are also much more likely to trip or fall if you are working too hard. A good idea is to buy a heart-rate monitor. These come with details of how to use them and usually have a chart advising you of the optimum heart–rate required based on your age and what you want to achieve. Your fitness instructor or doctor should also be able to give you this information. If you are seriously overweight or over 40 years old you are strongly advised to use a heart-rate monitor each time you work out. You can find heart-reat monitors at the Fitness Fanatic website, we particularly like the strapless ones which are more comfortable to wear.
Your fitness instructor can tell you more about how to stay safe while exercising. Remembering to warm up and cool down is necessary, as is doing the right exercises for your body, age, and gender. When you work out, you should feel your best, not be worried about injury. Staying safe is important. If you are hurt, you won’t be able to do aerobics while you recover, and you will miss out on days or even weeks of training.
