Most people think that that to burn fat you need to increase your metabolism – and they would be right. Those same people will also say that you need half an hour of aerobic exercise on a treadmill, elliptical machine, Rower, etc. several times per week, and that the more you do this each week the better.

People believe this because it has been the standard recommendation for fat burning by many fitness professionals for many years.  Find your ‘ Ideal Fat Burn Heart Rate’ and stay at that heart rate for about 1/2 an hour several times per week. However, recent research has shown that there are much more efficent methods to burn fat.

Of course, you WILL burn calories while you’re running on your treadmill, but it is unlikely to give you the transformation you desire using that system alone.

Aerobic exercise can be counter-productive…

However, aerobic exercise done like this is often counterproductive to burning fat. Why? Well, here are some reasons:-

Low intensity aerobics uses your stored body fat for energy during the sessions. Ok, that’s fine, BUT, your body gets used to this and it can cause your body to store more body fat between session ready for your next workout!

Even worse, this type of exercise when done frequently,as is usually advised, trains your cardiovascular system to be efficient. OK, sounds good, your heart and lungs can actually reduce their capacity for work as they are getting more efficient at doing easy work (your long duration, low intensity aerobic workouts), which reduces their ability to handle sudden changes and harder workouts, sprints etc.

Because you are never challenging your body to go beyond what it’s capable of you are not going to get the benefits you deserve and are really capable of.

What should you be doing?

Instead of all the mundane low intensity aerobic exercise, you should be challenging your body to increase its capacity, this will make you stronger and able to deal with stress more easily. The fastest and most efficient way to increase your metabolism and burn fat faster is to add lean muscle to your body through resistance training. If you really want life changing results in the quickest possible time the you need to build muscle. When you add lean muscle to your body you’ll be literally turning your body into a fat burning machine! You don’t need to become a muscle bound athlete, if you’re a lady you can regain your sexy, feminine figure. As you lose fat using this method your true shape will begin to show.

As an example, let’s assume you are eating the amount of calories that allow you to maintain your current bodyweight. If you had a way to add lean muscle to your body through proper resistance training your body would have to use some of those calories you’re eating to feed the new muscle, this becomes a calorie deficit in your body.

Lose fat as you rest…
